Current Columbia Campus Students

How do I apply for on campus housing?

To be considered for on-campus housing, students must complete an interest form for the community that best suits them. If approved for housing, students must complete an official contract online through my.sc.edu and submit the $150 advanced room payment and application fee. A complete list of available communities, as well as interest forms, can be found by visiting the Current Student Sign-Up page.

How is priority for housing determined?

All current undergraduate students who wish to stay on campus for Fall 2017/Spring 2018 must select a community and complete the appropriate University Housing interest form. The interest forms will be reviewed by each community and take into consideration the following criteria when awarding housing to students:

  • Involvement in the community during previous years
  • Willingness to act as a mentor for first-year students within the community
  • Standing at the University of South Carolina

How do I apply for housing if I am currently studying abroad?

Students who are not on campus can access all the sign-up information online. Important dates and deadlines about the sign-up process will be emailed to your University email account.

Is there a fee to apply for campus housing?

All students who are approved for housing must submit a non-refundable $50 application fee and $100 advanced room payment in order to finalize their placement and be given a room selection appointment time. Please read all Stipulations Relating to Cancellations and Refunds carefully before signing and submitting your housing application.

How do I pay the application fee and advance room payment?

Students must submit their contract online via my.sc.edu. We only accept Visa, Mastercard and Discover credit and debit cards. Checks and cash are not accepted.

Is the housing application a contract?

Yes. By completing and submitting this application/contract, you are “contracting” yourself to live on campus for two consecutive semesters (only one if applying for Spring only). It is a legally binding contract. Keep in mind that by submitting an online contract, you are submitting your electronic signature and accepting the terms.

Is there a deadline by which to submit my application?

Visit the Current Student Sign-Up page for specific dates and deadlines related to this year.

How can I be sure to get the roommate I want?

Students may request up to three roommates. In order to be assigned together, each student must mutually prefer the others. All roommates must select the same community and complete the corresponding University Housing interest form by the designated deadline. We cannot guarantee placement with a preferred roommate, but if approved for housing, mutually requested roommates will receive similar appointment times for online room selection.

When will I find out my actual assignment?

Current students who met the deadline for University Housing interest forms will receive an email if they are approved for housing in the community they selected. Visit the Current Student Sign-Up page for specific details related to this year.

How do I request a room change?

In an effort to create stronger Living and Learning Communities within our residence halls, it is increasingly important for students to select a community that best fits their interests when applying for on-campus housing. For this reason, University Housing will only be able to consider room changes within the Living and Learning Community in which you have applied and been awarded housing through. Room changes typically cannot occur until after the fall semester has begun. Visit the Current Student Sign-Up page for specific details related to this year.

How do I cancel my housing?

A student who wishes to cancel their housing contract must do so through my.sc.edu. Simply return to the original contract and select the option to cancel the housing contract or assignment. Please read the Stipulations Related to Cancellations and Refunds before submitting a request. Students may check the status of a cancellation request periodically through my.sc.edu. A student’s contract is non-transferable to the Greek Village.

Is there going to be an increase in housing rates for next year?

Housing rates are set in July. Rate increases over the past several years have been in the 3% to 5% range. You can view a list of current housing rates online.

Are there any halls which stay open during University break periods (Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break) for current students?

Yes. All apartment-style halls and Maxcy remain open during break periods.

How do I apply for Summer housing?

Applications for Summer Sessions will be available online on my.sc.edu. Since summer school assignments are made based on the date of submittal, you should apply as soon as possible. All assignments will be posted to the web on my.sc.edu at least one week before classes begin for each session. The priority deadline for summer housing is early spring.
