Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship

The Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 at the University of South Carolina by the parents of Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina as a way of remembering these students’ outstanding leadership contributions to the University of South Carolina Residence Hall Association. Melinda and Lawrence were engaged to be married when they died in a house fire shortly after their graduation from the University of South Carolina.

During their tenure at the University of South Carolina, Melinda served the former Towers Hall Government for two years as Vice President and Lawrence served for a year as the Residence Hall Association President, after being the Towers Hall Government Treasurer for two years. Both were valuable leaders in the University of South Carolina residence hall community.

Friends have described Melinda and Lawrence as fun-loving and social. They made many friends at the university through their outgoing personalities and leadership within the residence halls. The entire University Housing family was affected by their tragic death at such a young age. Their legacies continue to live on in the scholarships awarded each year to outstanding University of South Carolina students who exhibit leadership within Housing.
