Designing Sustainable Communities for Living and Learning

James R. “Red” Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Smith who worked for University Housing for many years. “Red” as many called him, took special interest in students, especially those who became involved with University Housing, whether working as Residence Mentors, Desk Assistants or Residence Hall Association officers.

Mr. Smith worked in Housing in the Towers Area as an Area Manager for many years where he often spent time after normal working hours talking with students, offering them his help and advice whenever possible. He encouraged them to be active in their community, not only on-campus, but in the surrounding community as well.

Friends of Mr. Smith recall that he was always willing to help students in any way possible. One friend recalled that Mr. Smith had been known to give money out of his own pocket to a student who was hungry and might not have extra money of their own. Mr. Smith passed away in 1987 from cancer and this scholarship was founded in his name the following year. He was well-loved in University Housing and is greatly missed by those who knew him. His legacy continues on in the scholarships awarded each year to outstanding University of South Carolina students who are involved in University Housing as a staff member or serve in a leadership role.
