Joseph Fortune

Joe Fortune has already enjoyed a long career with the University of South Carolina. His career began "unofficially" in 1989 when he served University Housing as a Resident Advisor in Maxcy residence hall. His professional career in Student Services began in 1992 when he served as a fact checker for the University of South Carolina Registrar. His career break came in 1996 when he requested a transfer to work as a Student Services Coordinator with University Instructional Services. During this time, he was able to persuade his Director to allow him to work with faculty and students to improve services to distant learners around the globe using emerging technologies.

In 1999, Joe joined the University's Division of Student Affairs, making him one of the youngest members of the Housing management team. His career took another step into public relations, marketing, sales, policy management and development, training, and technology development when he was promoted to his current position as the Director of Administration.

Mr. Fortune resides in Irmo where he enjoys gardening and entertaining friends. In his free time he likes reading, traveling, completing small projects around his home and spending time with loved ones.

Eddie Thomson
Assistant Director

Eddie Thomson began his career in 1990 working as a Postal Agent for the University of South Carolina. During his time with the Postal Service, he personally touched the lives of innumerable students and employees through coordination of their daily services. After nine years with the Postal Service, Eddie spent four years working for the University of South Carolina's Department of Distance Education and Instructional Support. As a Student Services Manager, he was responsible for all front-line student services associated with course delivery through satellite and video.

It was not until a position opened in University Housing that Eddie decided to try working with students outside of the virtual classroom. He accepted the position as Senior Assignment Coordinator in 2004. He is responsible for working with a myriad of students and staff to provide housing for over 7,000 students annually. Satisfied students, happy and loyal parents and a great living and learning environment: that's the reputation of employees like Mr. Eddie Thomson.
